Meeting: Ken & Liam — Presentation Strategy

Date: 2026-04-07 (evening) Attendees: Ken Yang, Liam Wilkinson (“UBI”)

Summary

Ken shared his opening slides on land value and housing affordability. Liam gave detailed feedback and they developed discussion questions for Eric’s portion of the April 8 event.

Presentation Feedback

  • Structure: Liam recommended “tell them what you’re going to say → say it → recap it” format
  • Remove the “cube” metaphor — confusing
  • Rephrase Eric’s quote about tax inequality — currently confusing
  • The example comparing tax payments of young worker vs. senior needs clearer framing
  • Leading framing: Commonwealth Canada’s mission = addressing wealth created in common
  • Key narrative: privatizing the common good leads to housing unaffordability and inequality
  • Use “stagnant” or “frozen” (not “sideways”) to describe housing market

Core Message / Story

  • Commonwealth Canada’s diagnostic approach to Canadian economic problems
  • Land = biggest singular asset in Canadian economy, major source of wealth
  • Land value taxation + land value capture as policy solutions
  • Rebalancing tax system to address economic injustice

Discussion Questions for Eric

  1. Can housing become affordable again without a meaningful and painful corrective measure?
  2. How should political leaders navigate short-term pain vs. long-term gain?
  3. What’s the distinction between local housing issues vs. structural housing issues?
  4. What metrics/indicators should measure success?
  5. What single factor should be prioritized?
  6. Is being “pro-housing” synonymous with being “pro-development”?
  7. What policies could individual municipalities implement that, if adopted broadly, could drive significant affordability improvements?

Action Items

  • Ken: Clarify with Eric if he wants guided question format; whether Ken should move through slides with him
  • Ken: Revise presentation opening per Liam’s structural feedback
  • Ken: Remove/replace cube analogy
  • Ken: Reframe young worker vs. senior tax example
  • Liam: Send any additional burning questions for Eric to Ken
